It's been almost two months since the Primary Wars ended (or at least called a ceasefire) and as a long time poster here (I joined in 2004 under the now frozen account Brit) I've been asked by the British publication Prospect Magazine to write a personal account of the Flame Wars, mainly concentrating DKos and MYDD.
I know, I know, I was clearly an Obama supporter. But this should be a fun and informative feature, focused around incidents and arguments, and being fair to both supporters and their candidates. So I'm calling veterans from all sides and none for their favorite moments, their best loved quips, the recollection of angst in a time of tranquility.
What do you remember of the Flame Wars?
Of course my narrative will cover the substantive issues, but also the contentious moments like 'The Strike', the various 'gates' - Bittergate and Snipergate, live blogging of results, various momentous bannings and huff puffs. I've already compiled a list of my favorite come backs and picture responses. I don't want anyone left out, and I want to get it right. So please feel free to add your highs and lows in comments or LINKS on this diary. I'll credit anyone where they want to be credited.
Just for your information: I'm a British writer, living in London, and part of the serious undertow of the piece is to explain how dynamic the netroots movement is in the US, and how community blogs and activism (sadly lacking here) had its big moment in the primary campaign, even if it almost resulted in virtual Civil War. My underlying aim is to let more people know about the vitality of progressive blogs, and how they will shape future political debate, here and in the US.
Oh. And I will get paid very little, if at all. I'm in it for the glory not the money. So come share some of the glory with me.
Update [2008-7-29 13:49:47 by duende]: Big thanks for the recs. As I said, I want to get this right, reflect all of us, and be something that the bulk of bloggers here would say 'Yes, that's about right.' So thanks for all the comments. It's dinner time here in London, and I'll be offline for a couple of hours - but looking forward to more memories.
If you want to contact me anonymously, you're welcome to use flamewars2008@googlemail.com as a MI6 dead letter drop.
Update [2008-7-29 19:36:28 by duende]: There are so many substantive, diverse and interesting comments, I don't know if I'll have time to reply to you all, but let me just say that - even despite a few flare ups - I'm impressed by the recall, passion, and openness of you all. And please see things from my perspective. You may still all be arguing about some aspects of the flame wars, but your engagement is a real tribute to US netroots democracy - something we don't have an inkling of here in the UK. And though I've had my issues with the administration here at times, it's still a great site with many eloquent and interesting contributors (from both> sides of the primary wars).
Believe me - ultimately this feature will be a celebration of the diversity and directness of American democratic politics. So kudos to you all for what you've achieved so far.
