"...which I suppose would include myself."

Alright, I'm sure you've seen some version of the below video where Chris Matthews asks sausage-brain to explain what appeasement means and protruding-forehead does his best imitation of Lenny from Mice and Men, "The rabbits, George. I want to pet the rabbits."

But I'd like you to skip past "screaming-dude-who's-greatest-college-e xperience-included-a-beer-bong-and-a-cop y-Jugs" (I know its hard) in favor of a later moment... starting at 4:07 and going to the end... where Chris Matthews bemoans the denotative meaning of phrases like "appeaser" and "cut-and-run" and "WMD" and "patriotism".

The quote from Matthews:

The whole mindset of the last several years... since 2000... has been to shut up critics. If you don't like a war policy you get branded with a name. You're unpatriotic. You're a cut-and-runner. You're an appeaser. You can't argue politics in America. You can't question power, because if you question it you're going tobet drummed out of acceptable society. You're going to called an appeaser. These magic words are used for one purpose... to shut you up... so they can continue with a policy."

And then later:

Arguing over policy... arguing over our place in the world shouldn't be seen as unpatriotic. In most cases it should be the essence of patriotism... We didn't have (a real debate) when we went to war in Iraq. To some its the media's fault. To some its just that people are intimidated to challenge this President.

And then keep going:

The shutting up of opposition is critical to running a country in an undemocratic way. Let's put it that way.

See, now I'm that guy in a cartoon who does a triple take, his eyes and his lips in several places at once due to  the fact that his face is moving so fast, because while I stand and applaud every word Chris Matthews is saying, please, correct me... HE IS NOT SOME NEW PUNDIT ON THE AIR IS HE? Hardball was on the air in 2001 and 2002 and 2003 and 2004 and 2005 and 2006 and 2007 and earlier this year, correct? And he sat across the desk as he hosted pundits in an endless picnic line of ants who did JUST EXACTLY WHAT HE IS NOW DECRYING and he said FUCK-ALL-OF-NOTHING.

At one point he shakes his head and talks about how he "hates" the phrase "WMD" because it links a whole myriad of different weapons under a banner of fear.

Mmmmmkay, Mr. Matthews, you wanna bet I could go through thetranscripts in early 2002 and find Andrea Mitchell or Judith Miller or Christopher Hitchens or any number of a thousand people spout on about WMD while you nod and look concerned?

Look, I'm not a grudge holder and I'm tempted to say nothing and just enjoy the conversion of the talking heads who see the crumble and decay that is the agenda of the Republican Party and start to scramble to be on the side of "right", but one small vindictive part of me can't do so without wanting to pound my fists on the table and scream.

To some its the media's fault.

You, you huge-headed-prattling-cheese face, ARE the media.

The words are "...which I suppose would include myself".

To some its the media's fault... which I suppose would include myself.

At that point... I suppose we're all good.

He lacks any convictions. (2.00 / 3)

He sees the tide turning so he is jumping on the bandwagon.  It's okay to enjoy it, but we should remember that he jump ship whenever it looks convenient.

Maddow (2.00 / 4)

Ms. Maddow has risen fast because she enters every discussion with facts and articulates them in a manner that befuddles others.
Matthews is usually a humbug..has been very dismissive of both Obama and Clinton.
Maybe getting some recognition for something he should have done before might make a difference...
I doubt it...

Matthews - pot kettle black (2.00 / 7)

Matthews is a hypocrite.  The other day, he was stating about Hillary's demise and he pointed to her vote on the Iraq war.   And he kept hammering that point - which is fine, I do know that seems to be one of the major reasons why  a lot of people didn't support her, but Obama

But I remember HIS coverage on the lead-up to the Iraq war and especially his coverage on the "Mission Accomplished" speech by Bush.  He was not critical - in fact, during that MA speech, he was drooling over Bush's package (Bush's flightsuit, in case you missed that).

I kid you not.  So, whereas he is correct that a lot of members in BOTH parties fell down on the job for various reasons, the media and his role also were cheerleaders and never investigated.  If he wishes to demonized Hillary for that, he needs to get a pic of himself and put horns on it, in all fairness.

Tweety (2.00 / 3)

is the obnoxious doofus who always put his hand up first in class, whether he knew the answer or not.

He grew up believing that no matter where he was, he was always the smartest person in the room.

He is so totally self absorbed that he'll take any position politically that will further his position at the tables of the best dinner parties in Georgetown.

The good news is (2.00 / 2)

that the networks (thanks to Keith Olbermann) have begun to realize where the gravy train really is.  After years of assuming incorrectly that Fox-lite was the way to boost viewership, the 2006 elections and the enormous turnout for the Democratic primaries have forced them to reconsider.

I remember when Nixon used to talk about the silent majority, claiming they were the people who supported the war in VietNam.  I was only a teenager then but I looked around at my friends, family, neighbors, etc. and realized that we were the silent majority and we were all totally against the war.

Same is true these days...the silent majority is us.  The elections hammered that point home once again.  And the media, slow on the uptake, has finally awakened to that fact.

As for Matthews, he's hinted at a run for political office.  I'm guessing he thinks intelligence would be a good quality to display.
